Summer Sunflowers

Summer Sunflowers
They grow so fast...
In winter when the fields are white,
I sing this song for your delight -

In spring, when woods are getting green,
I'll try and tell you what I mean.

In summer, when the days are long,
Perhaps you'll understand the song;

In autumn, when the leaves are brown,
Take pen and ink and write it down.

Young Romeo

Earlier this week, after picking him up from school, Evander asked me, "Can I tell you a secret and you not tell Daddy?"

"Sure," I replied while in my mind I promptly determined when I would be able to share this conversation with Nate.

He continued, "Sophie has a crush on me." Looking in the rearview mirror I could see his eyes light up and his smile grow. "And I have a crush on her too." Pause. "You know what that means, right?"

What does that mean?! "Um yeah. It means you like her."

"Nope. Better" Grin is getting bigger.

"You love her?"

"Nope. Even better than that. It has the word 'in'." He's practically bursting with excitement and I'm biting the insides of my cheeks to keep from laughing.

"You're IN love?" And here at age 6 he has officially placed someone higher than me, his mother, on the love totem pole.

"Yep. We're pretty much already dating. I spend practically all morning with her."

He then went on to tell me that there is a new restaurant opening up and perhaps one day I could drop him off and her mother could drop her off. Maybe I stay, maybe I don't. But he and Sophie get a chance to have a nice meal together.

I had been hoping that he would be oblivious to girls until he graduated from high school and moved out of the house so I would never have to deal with it. The good part to all this is that he has a little more motivation to do work at school because he wants to do it with Sophie.
